Numbing Cream
If you wish to use numbing cream for your appointment, I am more than happy for you to do this as your comfort during a tattoo will always be a priority. I am aware some areas of the body are particularly tender when having a tattoo so, I may even recommend you using numbing cream myself.
Since I have started tattooing I have noticed a handful of clients reacting to the cream, a few more recently. Unfortunately, when your skin reacts to the numbing cream I am unable to tattoo you and I have to reschedule your appointment, which can be disappointing.
TKTX Numbing Cream
I currently recommend TKTX numbing cream, which is the leading brand for tattoo numbing cream. I will always recommend you complete the quiz on their website to find the numbing cream most suited to your skin type and to complete a patch test.
Please be advised that although you may have not reacted to your patch test, you may still react to the cream on the day of your appointment.
How to Apply Your Numbing Cream
Please follow these steps carefully to apply your numbing cream:
- Wash hands thoroughly.
- Remove any excessive hair.
- Make sure the area is clean, dry and not cold!
- Spread the cream onto unbroken skin in a thick layer over the area, around 2-3mm thick! Don’t rub it in!
- Cover it with plastic film – make sure it’s air tight, but not too tight. Masking tape is great for awkward places! (This process can prevent evaporation while encouraging slow and proper absorption into the skin.)
- Wash your hands thoroughly after application!
- Leave for 1.5 – 2 hours (no more than 2 hours).
- Remove the film, wipe/clean the area (I will do this for you).
Signs You Are Reacting to the Numbing Cream
If you have any of these symptoms please seek medical advice
- Swelling
- Redness
- Burning
- Itching
- Hives
- Blistering
Once the Tattoo Has Started
I have also invested in a numbing spray called Bactine which can be applied once the skin is broken. I apply this spray once I’ve completed the linework of your design to take the edge off the soreness of the tattoo. This is particularly useful for colour work.
